Post-COVID Midwifery: Lessons in Adaptation, Innovation, and Integrity

Inspired by the births of her daughters, Catrice Harris has supported families through labor, birth, postpartum, and lactation since 1992. Trained in lactation at the University of Texas Health Science Center and City of Houston WIC, she later became a certified birth and postpartum doula. In 2012, she left Corporate America to pursue midwifery full-time. Now a solo home birth midwife and staff midwife at a Houston birth center, Catrice also mentors doulas, focusing on underserved areas. She serves as Treasurer on the NACPM board, dedicated to advancing midwifery and honoring the value CPMs bring to their communities.

Chetana Kulkarni is a Certified International Midwife, Lactation Educator Counselor, La Leche League Leader, Lamaze-trained Childbirth Educator, Birth Centre Consultant, and entrepreneur. Her work focuses on transforming community-based birth in Bangalore and across India. She believes that accessible, high-quality, and inclusive reproductive care—from adolescence to menopause—is vital for a just society. A strong advocate for modern midwifery, Chetana combines compassion and skill to help address India’s maternity care crisis and bring safer, more joyful births to families.

Dr Hazel Keedle is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Academic Programs (Midwifery) at Western Sydney University. With over two decades of clinical and academic experience in midwifery and nursing, she is internationally recognised for her research on VBAC, birth trauma, and respectful maternity care. Author of Birth After Caesarean (2022) and The Clinician’s Guide to Better Birth After Caesarean (2025), she continues to champion evidence-based, woman-centred care through her research, teaching, and advocacy.

Supporting Women to have a Better Birth after Caesarean

Christie is a Certified Professional Midwife with over 25 years attending births. She specializes in working with people who have experienced traumatic birth. She recently rerouted her practice to work with birth trauma full time. In doing so she has been able to expand her trauma practice to include support for health care providers. Christie specializes in Somatic work and the Polyvagal Theory. Her work is based on helping her clients get to know their nervous system and why it does what it does. Christie is currently working on her Master’s in Social Work and hopes use that to continue to expand her work with trauma.

Dr. Gauri Lowe is an integrative medical doctor and women’s health guide whose work bridges clinical gynaecology with the wisdom of traditional healing. Her approach honours both modern evidence-based medicine and the sacred, cyclical nature of a woman’s life. Through her talks, writings, and mentorship, she offers grounded, compassionate insights into pregnancy, birth, and womanhood — supporting women to reconnect with their inherent wisdom and vitality. Hands that Remember: Reclaiming Midwifery Wisdom Across Continents

Robin Lim (aka Ibu Robin) is a midwife, author, and founder of Yayasan Bumi Sehat, a network of community health and birthing centers in Indonesia and the Philippines. Since 2003, she and her team have provided free prenatal, birthing, and emergency care to thousands, reducing maternal and infant mortality and promoting gentle, culturally respectful birth. Awarded CNN Hero of the Year (2011), Robin continues her hands-on work at Bumi Sehat Bali, mentoring midwives and advocating for compassionate, accessible maternity care worldwide.

Dr Sophia K. Johnson studied human medicine at the University of Witten/Herdecke, Germany, with study visits to Tanzania, Russia, the USA, Scotland, Austria and Italy. During her studies, she expanded her training and took part in the university curriculum for Chinese medicine and anthroposophic medicine. Since 2014, she has been working as a researcher and completed her doctorate at the Placenta Laboratory at Jena University Hospital. She lives with her family in Weimar, Germany and works there in a practice specializing in integrative women's medicine.
