Suturing Supply Guide
You will need:
- A vaginal model or Cow Tongue or Chicken Breast to practice on
- Needle driver
- Tissue forceps
- Stitch scissors
- Suture material
- A filament needle
For the best experience, I recommend practicing with what you’ll actually be using in your clinical work:
36” Vicryl 3-0 with a ½ circle 36mm CT needle.
Building muscle memory with your real-world materials matters.
That said, if you have access to expired or donated suture, you’ll still get excellent practice from any 2-0, 3-0, or 4-0 Vicryl, Vicryl Rapide, or Chromic Gut in any tip style, as long as the needle is 26mm or larger.
Please avoid silk suture or monofilament (the “fishing line” type) — the handling properties are too different and will work against the muscle memory we’re building.
When in doubt, bring what you have and we’ll work with it.
